Spring Jam & Fall Jam

Student Matt Weiman and drummer Alex Jamrozek during Fall Jam '08
December 13, 2008

What is Fall Jam? And Spring Jam?

Twice each year, once in the spring and again in the fall, I hire a professional drummer to come into my home studio and jam, with my students invited to participate. For each student who chooses to participate, the process starts with the student choosing the songs they want to play at the jam. Those are the songs we work on during lessons prior to the jam. Then on the day of the jam, the student gets the opportunity to play those songs with a REAL band, consisting soley of the student, Art (the teacher), and the pro drummer.

Why do you host these Jams?

The purpose of these jams is to give students the opportunity to take their playing beyond the den or the basement. It's designed to give students the experience of playing in a real band, and playing the songs of their choice in that real band! My goal as a teacher, is not just to teach you how to play your instrument, but also to teach you how to be a musician. And part of being a musician is learning how to play with other musicians. Spring Jam and Fall Jam are designed to give my students that very experience.
